Long Beach Medical Center Rehab Unit Opens
Art Gallery to Feature Local Artists

Long Beach, NY – Mary Mendoza, a member of the Long Beach Art League, is displaying a collection of original artwork at Long Beach Medical Center’s newest gallery, The Satellite Gallery on the Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation Unit.  Situated in the Medical Center’s East wing, the 15 pieces of watercolor, collage and mixed media provide a stimulating visual for patients, their families and hospital staff.

“We are delighted at the generosity of Ms. Mendoza and future League artists who will display their work in this setting,” said Christen Roper, CTRS.  Ms. Roper is the unit’s Recreational Therapist and PPS Coordinator.

According to Roper, painting is often used by therapists as a modality to restore function and dexterity in patients recovering from stroke, brain injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s and other neurological & orthopedic conditions.

“By holding a paintbrush and applying paint, patients can regain fine motor skills, muscle control & coordination,” explained Roper.  “Being surrounded by artwork inspires patients and allows them to work more expressively with our staff.”

Mary Mendoza holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Visual Art from Goddard College in Vermont.  A life-long student of the arts, she continued her training at The Boston Museum School, The Museum School in Aberdeen, Scotland and the Vermont State Craft Center.  She was employed as an art therapist for many years before returning to school to receive a Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling from C.W. Post College, NY.   In 2006, she was instrumental in establishing a permanent gallery for League artists in the Medical Center’s Imaging Corridor, which displays over 40 paintings and sculptures created by League members.  The League’s Spring 2008 Art Show will debut March 16th through June 14th and features Mendoza’s sculptures, along with the work of more than 30 artists.

“We are delighted with the Long Beach Art League’s collaboration to display such beautiful pieces of art for the enjoyment and therapeutic benefit of our patients and staff,” added Roper.  “It’s a wonderful addition to our Rehabilitation Unit.”
